The Week That Didn't Happen - Stand-By!

In my last post I said that the plan for Monday was to be on Stand-By.

So, I stood by and did bugger all!

This past week I have been sat at home doing nothing, please don't get me wrong - I'm as far as I'm aware, still on full pay, so I am certainly not complaining, but I was certainly not expecting a full week at home!

The only down side to being on Stand-By is that you feel like you can't start anything in case you do get the call!

My week has been a bit stagnated as a result.

However, I have mastered a new skill, and that was being able to video capture my screen direct from my laptop.

After learning this new skill I managed to cobble together a virtual tour of my home town of Shaftesbury in Dorset using Google Street View as I basically talk nonsense!

You can find it here --> https://t.co/kgyAdDhbwq?amp=1

Have a watch and let me know what you think - I've also put one together for Child Okeford which is where I spent the first few years of my life before I moved to Shaftesbury.

I haven't been back to Shaftesbury for a while, once all this virus has calmed down, we will have to return.

But, who knows when that will be?! It seems to be never ending with no return to normality in sight at all.

Will we ever return to normal? I'm not so sure if we will!

I'll find out later today what the plan is for Monday, if there is a plan!

But till then I have some solar lights to put up in the garden and the plumber is out yet again later as the shower is still not working as it should.

It really is a Rock 'N' Roll lifestyle we are living at the moment!

Stay Safe - Stay At Home!

Holiday Over - Back To Work - Or Is It?

This week I have done very little other than cook, drink and sleep!

What an existence! Ordinarily that sounds like heaven, but when you are denied the right to go where you want at any time, it all becomes a bit weird!

I took the time to make Ethiopian Coffee using my Jebena - a traditional coffee pot!

I also made a video showing how I did it - You can watch it here https://t.co/03gNoaVHyA?amp=1

Like I said in my last post, this was a wasted holiday for me. My company would not allow me to cancel it.

I understand to a degree the reasoning behind it, but now I am left at a disadvantage of not being able to travel over to Holland with Kiera to visit her family once we come out of lockdown.

I phoned up the company on Friday to find out what the plan was for Monday.

To put it simply, there is no plan, not enough trucks available so I am sat at home on stand-by!

I'm on full pay, so not bad, but to be honest I'd rather be furloughed for 3 weeks and not have to be ready to go at a moments notice. That is a pain! I all ready did 3 days of that 2 weeks ago.

Oh well, I've got a job and I am still virus free - I think!

It's hard to tell, you sneeze and your first thought is - I've got it!

Am I sweating because I'm just hot or have I got a fever? Am I coughing because it's just clearing my throat or is it a sign?

I can see why people with anxiety are suffering, it's enough to bring on a anxiety attack just thinking about it!

I have managed to cook some great meals though, it's nice to have the time to be able to do it, and to have a few beers at the same time!

It's now Sunday afternoon, had one too many last night and paying the price now!

Just got my gear to sort out for next week in case I'm called out and that's it!

Hope everyone is staying safe!!

On Holiday But Stuck At Home!

We should of been in Holland by now, but due to the bat shit crazy world we are all living in right now I find myself on holiday and sat at my kitchen table!

I finished work at lunch time on Good Friday, came home to find the shower was not working.

That would not of been so bad normally, but due to current events I haven't taken a shower all week and was in great need of one!

As you can imagine I was not a happy teddy!

But, I was alive and healthy, so one cannot complain too much.

Saturday we tried to get our normal plumber to come out, but it was like pulling hens teeth, and eventually gave up.

Saturday evening I tried another mate (ex services) and he said he would be round first thing on Sunday, which he was. Should of called him first.

We thought it was the pump playing up, and managed to get it going again, but not for long, and it was soon failing to work correctly.

Finally we took the pump apart and loads of muck was clogging up the filters, so let's hope that this was the problem. Time will tell.

Anyway, I managed to play the harmonica live on facebook! Never done anything like that before and I hope it gave people a few smiles! I'd had a few beers at this stage so it was all a little ropey. But it was fun to do.

I also made another video of me making a Chilli Con Carne - I was drinking as I went and on watching it back you can clearly see and hear me getting progressively pissed!

https://t.co/vHsfZisVMB?amp=1 Thats the link to my Youtube Channel - Ill warn you now, it goes on for a while and is full of me swearing with the odd rant thrown in!

I had a very sore head the next day, and we both did absolutely nothing!

Yesterday I just pottered about, and today, has been similar, although I have got a sausage casserole bubbling away in the slow cooker, and I got my Ethiopian Jebena out and made some rather delicious coffee.

I hope everyone is staying safe, I'm not back at work till next Monday. I've a close friend who is now isolating and another friend who is just coming through from having it.

He was very close to be admitted to hospital and openly admits to it scaring him badly!

So don't take any risks, keep safe and stay at home!

YouTube Channel - I'm Going To Have A Go!

Over the years I have watched many Youtube videos, some good, some bad, so I thought it time that I had another go at making some videos of what I get up to on a daily basis.

As you all know, I'm not normal, in fact I pride myself with the fact that I'm far from normal.

Who want's to be normal???

I have made a few videos before whilst I have been out on my bike, but to be honest they have been a pain in the arse to do.

With mobile technology and quality now being so good, I thought I would try my phone out to see how I got on.

I have a GoPro, which I find a pain to use, probably because I'm not sure how the thing works, but with a phone, it really is point and shoot!

So, last week I made a few vids, and have put them up onto Youtube - I will put the links down below.

Please take the time to have a look, and tell me what you think.

As you are probably well aware, I am not Politically Correct and I served in the British Army, so of course I "Swear Like A Trooper".

You have been warned!

youtu.be/IoL0IOvtKLQ This link takes you to my trip travelling out of Nottingham South Bound on Monday.

youtu.be/a8san-_msaw This link takes you to my trip travelling on the A34 South Bound on Good Friday morning.

It would be great if you followed me on Youtube by subscribing, and giving a thumbs up if you like it or a thumbs down if you think it's shite!

Either way let me know - I've another video to put up later of me leaving Southampton Docks but I'll put that up later.

No doubt there will be a few cooking videos and a few drunken ones as well, using my phone I think the quality is actually pretty good. I've certainly seen a lot worse!

So click the links and get to hear what I sound like!

Stay safe.................

Week Of Driving A HGV Truck Under Lock Down

First week back and it's been a long and strange week!

My Mercedes truck is still being stood down, so I was in a DAF xf all week, as the regular driver was on holiday.

It was a (69 plate) new truck, and was nice to drive, but to be honest I still prefer my Mercedes.

Monday

I was in at 0700hrs to sterilise the truck and to load all my belongings into it to last me a week.

Food, bedding and all the other one hundred and one things that makes my life easier whilst being out on the road!

I was planned to go to Chandlers Ford which was just up the road then across to Tilbury Docks, unload my box and head back to Southampton.

That soon changed and I was heading North towards Nottingham.

The roads were real quite, this really was the first time I had driven any where since the UK introduced Lock Down measures. It all felt a bit strange!

I made it up to Nottingham in good time, the picture above shows the truck I was driving and with a 20ft container behind. The trailer has to be slid into a special position to make sure the weight is evenly distributed across the axles.

I stopped at Cherwell Valley Services, the toilets were open and so was M and S Food Hall and WH Smiths, but that was it. I think I only saw a handful of people whilst I was in there, it just did not feel real!

I'd been to the company before so knew where I was going. The other times I've been there it has always been difficult to park due to the amount of cars all over the place. But, due to the lock down, there was not a car in sight, so made it very easy to get set up.

I had to shrink the trailer down so they could empty it.

It only took an hour for them to unload, just enough time to have a brew and catch up on facebook!

So much for essential supplies - I had artificial grass on board!

But, it is keeping other folk in a job, so not a bad thing I guess?

Heading out of Nottingham was straight forward with no traffic to contend with, my journey back being, M1, A43, M40, A34 and a quick blast on the M3 back to Southampton.

I missed out on going onto the docks, as between 0500hrs and 0700hrs then 1700hrs and 1900hrs they shut, this is so the operators can sterilise the cranes and straddlers to keep them safe.

I got back at 1730hrs and did not have enough hours left to wait to go onto the docks so it was back to the yard and park up for the night.

I stayed in our yard, it just isn't worth me travelling home when I only have 9 hrs off. By the time I'm home fed and asleep it's time to be going back to work!

Hence I tend to stay in the yard unless I have a late start.

Tuesday

I was up and on the dock at 0400 hrs, box off and box on and I was off to Corby up in Leicestershire.

Once again, an easy run up with no traffic at all.

Another highly critical time sensitive load - Prawn bloody Crackers! I kid you not!

Not much of a view! Had to wait a bit to be tipped, then it took a couple of hours, but once done, I was heading back down South.

Due to the length of time it took to unload I missed going on the docks, so another night spent in the yard and another early start!

Never had a Creamy Cajun Chicken and Rice before, but it was rather good for a microwave meal.

As I said earlier, I'm not in my Mercedes, this DAF has an inbuilt DAF microwave, which is low wattage, so it takes ages to heat anything up. In my Mercedes I have a 1000w invertor and it's brilliant.

A simple mug of milk for my milky coffee in the mornings takes 3min 10 secs in the DAF whereas in the Merc it takes just 2mins! A big difference.

Wednesday

Back on the docks for 0400hrs and heading North all the way up to Pocklington which is just outside of York.

It took a while to get up there but made it on time, and my life was made easier by the guys there who undid my doors and unloaded and closed me back up without me getting out of the cab!

I was there a couple of hours unloading, this time I had tyres on board. A bit more of an essential load, so felt a little better about it.

Not much of a view as they unloaded though!

Once I was clear I was heading South, I wanted to get down as far as I could with the time I had remaining.

In the end I got as far as J23 on the M1 - there is a truck stop here, I've stayed here before and it's been ok.

Pulled in and it had a few trucks in all ready, just over half full, so parked up, paid for parking and went in to use the loo. The cafe was doing food, but takeaway only. I had food I could of cooked but was feeling a little lazy and the Roast Pork dinner was looking good and for £5.00 it had to be done.

Dinner was eaten outside on the catwalk, it was a warm evening. After that I settled down with my book and had an early night once I had spoken to Kiera which I do every evening.

Didn't get much of a view!

Thursday

0230hrs and the wheels are turning!

An easy run down to Southampton, I stopped on the way down for a break, went back to the yard to refuel and by the time I had done all of that it was time to go on the docks.

I had a time slot of 0800hrs, it did not take me long to get my box off and loaded once more.

This time it was a temperature controlled box or Reefer as it is commonly known (as in refrigerator).

I definitely had a worth while load on now, medical supplies.

Back up the road to Coleshill, which is just off the M42 North of Warwick and East of Birmingham. I'd been here before which always makes life a little more easier.

At first they were unwilling to tip me as I was late, my company all ready knew this, in fact they knew that I would be late at 1630 the previous day! My new booking time was 1300hrs instead of 1100hrs. However this information for what ever reason had failed to get to the people who needed it and that was the warehouse staff who were operating on a skeleton crew!

In the end I managed to sweet talk them, and 3 hrs later I was good to go. Not that I could go far as I was more or less out of time!

Luckily there was a truck stop just 20mins down the road.

I pulled into Lincoln Farm Truck Stop and parked up in a dust bowl of a yard!

Made my way over to pay, and to be honest it was grim. The toilets had last been refurbished in the 50's and the loo's had no seats, straight to porcelain!

As I entered the cafe to pay for parking I noticed the green and black hygiene rating sign displayed at the door.

Ratings are from 1 start to 5 stars, 5 stars being the best. Most places these days are 5 stars with a few dropping down to 4 stars. However this place only had 3!

It just looked skanky, cracked floor tiles and chipped formica tables. So decided I would pay for parking and not eat from there.

Getting the virus is one thing, but food poisoning on top is a risk to far!

Back to the cab, and just chilled out, watched a bit of YouTube and read and fell asleep.

Good Friday

It was a later start for me today, I just had to run down South to the docks, unload the box and return to the yard.

Was still up at 0430hrs and on the road for 0500hrs.

Travelling back down the M1 was strange, it was the same the day before.

Normally at those sort of times (early hours) it's like a train of trucks heading South, truck after truck after truck. It was so quiet today I could put my main beam on - I was the only truck around at some points!

Stopped for a break at Sutton Scotney services and was hungry, bought a cheese and onion sandwich from the shop and turned it into a toastie on my catwalk.

Turned out great and much needed along with a Costa Coffee.

Down on to the docks, box off quickly and back to the yard.

Refuelled, parked up and emptied all my gear into my car.

I then set about sanitising the truck as best I could with anti-bacterial wipes.

I finally got home around 1200hrs, I was knackered, but still alive and as far as I can tell, virus free!

It now so happens I am off for a week. We should of been going to Holland but that clearly is not going to happen and my company is not allowing anyone to cancel holidays.

So I'm at home for the week - at least the weather looks good!

Stay safe everyone!!!!!

Stand By - Stand By!

Well, I'm back at work - sort of!

I'm on Stand By - There is no truck for me to drive so I'm working from home this week.

A truck is available for me next week, I pick it up Monday and I'm then tramping through to Thursday.

As of Good Friday I'm then on holiday for a week!

We should of been going over to Holland to see Kiera's Dad but for obvious reasons that is now on hold.

The annoying thing is, is my company will not allow me to change my holiday dates so it buggers up me going over later on in the year!

Many of the places we go to, once backed onto a bay, we have to hand over our keys to the warehouse staff to ensure we cannot drive off with anyone still in the back!

It is a bit excessive but there have been cases when this has actually happened.

However, due to the Corona Virus I'm not exactly happy about handing my keys over due to cross contamination, so I have made up a dummy set, placed them in a zip lock back and sealed it with a travel padlock.

Impossible for them to remove the keys without me noticing, and if they do, they had better have a bloody good reason for doing so!

I have also completed the sign for my in laws, we went down to drop off their shopping as they are now both confined to barracks and I put it up for them.

I think they liked it!

Certainly stands out, I gave it a couple of coats of varnish to seal it, so will be interesting to see how well it weathers!

Cooked some squid rings the other night, they were really cheap from Aldi, all I did was dust them in plain flour and cooked them off on a high heat in sunflower oil.

Turned out really well!

Just had my job through for Monday, in for 0700hrs, load just up the road at Chandlers Ford (Southampton) then it's a drive up to Tilbury Docks to unload the box for export.

No idea where I will end up after that, maybe back down to Southampton or over to either London Gateway or Felixstowe. Will have to wait and see.

No plans for the weekend - not like we can go anywhere, but, what's the betting the beaches and forests will be full, especially as Sunday is supposed to be glorious.

When will people learn. I hope they all stay away, but there are some incredibly stupid folk about!

Stay safe..............
